Milk
Milk is familiar to most of us- white, delicious and cold. It’s the ultimate comfort food. Humans have been drinking milk for thousands of years while keeping cows, goats and sheep for their meat and their milk since agriculture began. People in different parts of the world use milk from the yak, water buffalo, camel, elk, mare, caribou and reindeer. In Vermont however, the cow is the number one animal used for milk. Currently, Vermont has 1,386 cow dairy farms, 14 goat dairy farms, and six sheep dairy farms. More about dairy animals. At first glance milk seems pretty simple, but it’s not...it’s a pretty complex liquid. It has the ability to change into many other wonderful and delicious forms such as cheese, yogurt, ice cream and butter, to name just a few. |
